with the tides
Thalassophile
(noun) a person who feels a deep connection to the sea.
If you've found your way here, I'd hazard a guess that you resonate with this term, and that you too feel drawn to the ocean in a way that words can't quite describe.
This has been me for as long as I can remember. Though for many years, I lived in cities and suburbs where the beach belonged to weekends away and summer holidays.
But in 2024, I finally followed the ever-growing calling of the ocean and moved from Melbourne to Byron Bay.
And as my feet landed in the sand, so did I.
My beach walks soon became sacred and where I once moved through life feeling lost and forever searching for something more... I finally began to feel connected to it.
And one day, on one of my beach walks, I noticed seaweed.
Something I must have walked past, walked over, walked on, hundreds of times before.
But that day, I decided to try pressing it.
And everything else grew from there.
Slowly, with patience and care, I learned how to tend to the seaweeds, preserve their delicate nature and honour their unexpected beauty.
And it wasn't long before I realised I wasn't just pressing seaweed.
I was learning what it means to live with the tides....
The moon waxes and wanes.
The tides rise and fall.
The moon pulls the tides.
The tides carry the seaweed to shore.
There are weeks when no seaweed washes ashore. And then suddenly, the tides shift and the shoreline is scattered with abundance. For a brief moment, we glimpse what usually lives hidden in the depths. And then it is gone again...swept back to sea.
And so we wait.
And wonder if perhaps we, too, are meant to ebb and flow. To trust the seasons of abundance and the seasons of stillness. The times of retreat and the times of expansion.
To live a little more with the tides.
These prints are my attempt to hold something of this wisdom.
Each piece begins as a piece of seaweed... shaped by the tides, carried by the currents, collected by hand from the Northern Rivers coastline. Carefully pressed to preserve their intricate structure and organic beauty.
A fragment of the sea, resting gently on paper. Imprinted with the memory of a particular tide, a particular stretch of coastline, on a particular day.
My hope is that these prints bring a little of the ocean into your home.
A quiet reminder of the beauty nature offers us in the most unexpected places.
To trust the ebb and flow.
To live a little more with the tides.
From the bottom of the ocean, thank you
